Pure Power Conference—Nov. 4-5/05
In November 2005 we offered our first Pure Power Conference, and it was a huge success! One hundred fifty teen girls and their leaders attended from the Kelowna area, Kamploops, and Vernon. Over 60 dedicated volunteers helped make the weekend memorable.
Pure Power was a venue for teen girls, youth leaders, and mentors to learn about the power of their choices in their friendships, dating relationships, and relationship to God, the source of true empowerment. Besides the three teaching sessions by Carolyn Stober and Deb Walker, girls enjoyed drama presentations, a fashion show, interactive activities and games, creative and informative workshops, great food, as well as concerts on Friday and Saturday evening. Community support was strong—businesses donated financial support, supplies, and door prizes. Girls left the conference with the message that they are important women of influence, called to create change in their world. Girls who had the courage to attend the conference alone left with a sense of connectedness and new friendships.
GammaGirls - ongoing
Since the GammaGirls facilitator training
in Kelowna with Jill Kulhawy in September 2004, hundreds of teenage girls have completed the
GammaGirls program. GammaGirls training was also conducted in Salmon Arm in May 2006.
At GammaGirls, older and
younger women build strong relationships and discuss issues that
concern teen girls. The girls are
empowered to set boundaries in
their lives and make good choices.
The feedback from our facilitators is very
positive. Says Jamie Roy, school counsellor
at Kelowna Christian School where 30
girls have completed GammaGirls, “the
experience of bringing this curriculum to
junior and middle school girls during an
after school program has been the highlight
of my teaching year.” Gay Corbett
from Kelowna Gospel Fellowship tells us
that she is “very impressed with the
GammaGirls curriculum and is excited
about the opportunity to bring these
practical lessons to the girls at KGF.”
Fifteen girls have already completed the
program at KGF.
Willow Park Church, Garden Valley
Community Church, and Kelowna Christian Centre have all run GammaGirls
groups.

What girls had to say about the Pure Power Conference ...
It was totally all girls and that helped us to concentrate on the awesome teaching instead of cliques and boys.
I loved the speakers. I love how some of us teens came up and shared things. It really opened up my heart and mind to things. I definitely want to come back and hear more.
I loved the honesty of the speakers as well as their boldness.
They spoke my thoughts out loud.
I liked how it was geared to reality ~ it was totally for our age and our reality. The people who were speaking knew what they were talking about.
Sweet bands / singers / performers / awesome meals.
The entire weekend was a blast. Music rocked! Activities rocked! Games were awesome!
SUE! Sue's amusing jokes, stories and her lovely voice. Sue is awsome! Sue is my Hero! (Sue Scholtens from Willow Park Church was the MC.)
It was like a huge group of friends even though not everyone knew each other.
WOW! We can REALLY relate to each other and we all have the same kind of experiences!
