Basic Principles on How to Talk to Your Kids

Listen first.

Four principles of effective persuasion:

  • Be understanding and try to see things from their perspective e.g. “That must be difficult.”
  • Present facts contrary to what they might be told e.g. “Did you know that marijuana interferes with male sex hormones?”
  • Don’t confront or challenge. Work around the issue.
  • Be supportive and positive about your child e.g. “You can do it."

Be prepared and tell the truth.
